I have some back problems myself and I just did this trail on Saturday (Falling Waters --> Lincoln --> Lafayette --> Old Bridle back down: 9 miles). I got through it okay. Falling Waters is a much steeper trail than Old Bridle Path, and there is one section (as mentioned by the first response to your post) where you must climb over a slab. I got past it even though I was barely able to bend at the waist due to pain, so I think others should be fine with it. I would not recommend crossing over the ridge trail to Lafayette though, especilly if your wife turned around at that section of the bridle path you mentioned.
