Subject: Parking Fee in National Parks - Double taxation

Private parks and land can charge use fees and parking fees. These fees can be used for anything the private holder wishes. Public lands, such as the National Parks, are owned by the populous and are funded through taxation of the populous. We own these lands and our taxes fund support beyond what they generate on their own. Logging could be a significant source of income for the WMNF if properly administered. All additional funds come from taxation. The parking fee is a tax imposed on the users of the land that they already pay taxes on in order to preserve all of the national lands. By adding a parking fee, users are penalized through double taxation. If current funding is inadequate to run the parks, close down portions that cost money such as salaries, buildings, etc. Users don’t need rangers present to enjoy a hike or to enjoy camping. If Rangers are present as a police force, fines should support their existence. If fines cannot support their existence, there are excess rangers in the forest.
Clearly I oppose the use fee which is an added tax over what we all pay now to support the national forest parking areas. The reason we are paying a use fee is that managers of the parks are not able to justify funds to support their spending. Perhaps we don’t need the spending or we need more funds from the tax base allocated to the National Parks. I cannot answer those questions. If I pay $20 to park my car in land I already own, I expect to deduct $20 from the final amount I owe the government on my tax preparation papers. Otherwise I am being penalized for using land I already own and pay taxes to support.
