THE SUN'S LOVE


Dew covered alpine flowers
gently open to receive the sun's unbounded love,
making their colours more vibrant,
strengthening their grasp upon life
though but for a season.

But humans have come to fear
their planet's sun;
they hide their skins in clothes
on sun-drenched beaches,
and if skin must be exposed,
quickly they baste with toxic lotions and screens.

What's to make of all of this?
Where does the fear originate?
In boardrooms and ad agencies
of course, and belief systems
liberally ladled with great helpings
of dreadful things; of bogey men.
Skin cancer: a curse - cause - or effect?
Whatever: it's fear – it makes money – it must be used!

Protected skin remains weak,
and a body untouched by sun, wind or rain
is a stranger on the land.
Once we walked with the great elements -
fire, air, water and earth... once
we worshipped that which gives life: no more.
Hope dies where faith lies
in artificial ways: a naked child knows that much .
