Between



The afternoon sun sinking through
a salty haze as evening beckons day.
A rising tide reclaiming rock-pools
with splintered light refracted across
flyaway ground fine, on shifting sand.
Lazily upon a gently heaving swell,
lone fishing boat returns to shore
stowed shellfish in abundance.
The sound of children flying kites,
with fabric fluttering to a drone
on the prevailing cooling breeze.
Others hanging lines,
to capture crabs with their screams
in delight echoing off-of masonry
then bounce along; the promenade.
Days toil, all done, a walk bare foot
through seaweed shingle sloping off,
ten dipping toes in frothing surf.
Left behind, telephone-lap-top to dilute
in waves where the words get lost:
a shell held to my ear,
has far the more significance.
Evaporating clouds like cotton wool
suspend on cerulean wash,
as an orange tint of settling down,
this molten globe of warming to behold
does quench its whole in silence.
Dipped seductively and completely
until then that sight is gone:
to be replaced, with a night to come.
