Subject: Reverie

Reverie

Retracing woodland paths
where squirrels scampered by
then in unabandoned gaiety
now are anxious in their haste
their store of winter food
is what preoccupies their mind.

Autumnal golds and russets
cloak the woodland way
bushes laden with treasure
a larder of berries rich and red
food for feathered friends
and those that scamper by.

Frost is firm upon the ground
a silver carpet underfoot
crunches crisply with my tread
leaves of autumnal shade
like tears fall gracefully to land
rustling loudly in their escape.

My moment’s contemplation
is disturbed by other sounds
laughing children run gaily past
the conker tree their aim
with sticks and athletic prowess
beat their quarry to the ground.

An eerie sound now haunts me
a whistle upon the autumn breeze
turning round I see you there
a smiling ghost of summer past.
Awoken from my reverie I turn
then continue on my path.
