Masquerade

Summer madness excitement anticipated
sultry sunshine shades disquiet not felt.
Venetian elegance permeates at masked ball
juxtopositioning of twenty-first decadence.
Rich jewel-coloured masks feather-trimmed
encrusted with sequins or bright gem stones
and maverick ones with animal faces.
Incognito in fine extravagant clothes
emboldened, hiding behind mask, stare out.
Gaily laugh, dance and drink to be merry
prepare to disappear before identity known.
Catch your glance from across the ballroom
no need for demureness behind the mask.
A look, a nod, an agreement understood.
The stars twinkle down in merriment
while the sky closes her blue velvet cloak.
The moonlight works her magic up above
as gondola floats on by two lovers entwined.
The masks still in place, secrecy lends an edge,
the feminine cerise mask meeting his purple.
Emerald taffeta rustles, crushed from above.
As sunrise makes a cautious appearance
flaming golden sky with her audacity
the lovers adjust their finery, return to land
and in the crowd of St. Mark’s Square,
amongst a thousand others masquerading,
lose each other for all eternity.
