I'm afraid this mail reaches you a bit too late. But I would be very interested in hearing what you thought the novel was about.

My own view is that, like Tóibín's other novels, the The Blackwater Lightship is very much about belonging to a place ie. Cush, and how your identity is closely linked to the environment you have been brought up in. Declan is seen to want to go back to Cush when he is dying, and Helen, whom in my view is the protagonist, seems to become prone to a resolution in the conflict with her mother by goind to Cush.
