The writing process varies according to the kind of writing. For me, it was nearly a torture to write coursework papers at my graduate school. I thought I already knew standard steps for writing a paper. I should think over the topic, gather information on the topic, write the thesis and develop a sketch, write a draft, revise and reorganize it, and proofread the paper. Certainly, it was logically sound steps but it didn’t help me. I had fear of writing and knew well that I would have enough pain before I finished a paper.
Paper assignments were usually given two weeks before the due date. Often I spent a whole week blaming myself for doing noting but waiting the burden of writing a paper got heavier. That was exactly the time for me to restart smoking that I had quit for weeks or months. I became nervous and lost my appetite. When it seemed I had no choice but to start at once, I hesitatively read my assignment to find out what topic should I write on. Then I spent a day or two in finding out data, copying books or articles as many as possible. Then I begin to read the whole heap of papers on my desk, developing ideas on the paper day and night. This work took a good couple of days. Without writing even a page, I had only one or two days left. Then I read the books and articles again to find out references and organize ideas in paragraphs. The next step was to put ideas in my own words. The time I finished this work, I got exhausted to death. Having no time or energy to proofread my paper, I submit my paper to the professor. It naturally had quite a few grammatical and spelling errors.
When I write a letter or make a brief report for my boss, writing steps are quite different. In the first place, I write down whatever ideas on my mind on my computer. Then I add appropriate data or information to support these ideas. Connecting these ideas in paragraphs and revising them are next steps. Then I change the order of sentences or paragraphs. Checking and correcting grammatical and/or spelling errors, using Word programs such as Hangul or MS word, are the last steps for these kinds of writing.
Whenever I meet a good novel or poem that successfully conveys what the author meant to, I cannot but envy him or her. How nice it would be to have a talent for writing! How great it would be if I found myself a little bit improved in writing and lessened my fear of writing when I finish this writing course.
