Actually Nelvana would be the ones losing money on the deal. Nelvana produced the Cardcaptors show from the CCS source material (I refuse to call Cardcaptors a version of CCS) and pushed it on TV, pushed the merchandising, etc. I am fairly sure the only thing Pioneer handled was the undedited pristine Japanese-language subbed version (which Nelvana probably realized the fans wanted, didn't want to bother/associate themselves with, and probably got Pioneer to pay for the rights).

So Pioneer, I imagine, is making money off of CCS, since to my knowledge sales of Card Captor Sakura DVDs have outstripped Cardcaptors DVDs. In fact I think Cardcaptors has died an ignominous death, while CCS is still widely available.
