Theresa pulled off her shoes, and lied down in her bed. She was too tired to take off her clothes, even though she would be more comfortable.
She glared up at the ceiling when she heard a knock at the door.
“Come in.” She softly whispered.
Pilar came rushing in wondering if she was all right.
“I’m just a little tired from my doctor’s visit with Whitney, that’s all.”
“Are you okay mija? What did Whitney say?”
“First things first mama. Why is the district attorney in our living room? Is he here on business? Did he come here to harass me about Rick’s death? She said looking worried.
“No, I don’t think so. He did ask for you however, but then we began to talk about when I worked as the Crane’s housekeeper.”
“Oh, I remember those times. Well, can you find out what he’s doing here? I’m very tired, and would like to take a little nap.”
“Sure Terisita. I’ll be back in a few. You rest, and I’ll find out what his purpose for being here is.”
“Thank you mama.” Theresa leaned back against the headboard, and whistled for Mr. Spoobers to join her to keep her awake while she waited.
When Pilar returned into the family room, she noticed him looking through one of the family’s photo album.
Pilar couldn’t help but to wonder what had him so engrossed.
“What are you looking at son? Oh please pardon me Mr. Crane, I don’t mean to be so informal.”
“It’s quite all right Pilar. I was looking at this picture of you in your housekeeper’s uniform at the mansion. All the memories are flooding back to me now. I can see your face in my head. You were so good to me. Almost like a mother.”
Pilar blushed at his words. She did care for the young master of the house. She treated Ethan just as she treated her own flesh and blood.
“Are there more pictures of you in your uniform?” He asked as he crossed over one leg relaxing a bit.
“Oh yes there is. Hold on a minute. I have something here that I think you would enjoy looking at.”
Ethan smiled up at the woman. He had made himself relax in the little two flat house. It wasn't what he was use to, but there was a sort of calmness about the place that made him feel good inside.
“Here you are. This photo album is filled with pictures of me as the Crane’s housekeeper, and also some pictures of you as well when you would be home on your spring breaks. While you look in the albums, I’m going to make you some tea. I’ll be right back.”
Ethan opened up the picture book and began to remember much happier times of when he was a small boy.
As he searched the pages, his heart warmed at how much Pilar cared for him so many years ago.
He paused at one certain page that prevented him from moving along. He noticed in one of the pictures a little girl with long pigtails. She looked very sad, and her eyes were almost on the verge of tears.
“Who is this little girl?” Ethan wondered to himself. “She looks so sad.”
Ethan couldn’t help to feel for the little girl in the picture. He wanted to reach out and pull her into a warm embrace.
“I think I remember this little girl.” Ethan said stunning himself. “She was sad because her brothers had gone off on a camping trip with their dad one spring vacation, and she had to come to work with her mother…” Ethan trailed off.
“Could this little girl be…” His voice went silent once again as he felt the presence of someone in the room watching him.
He lifted up his head and saw Theresa standing there starring at him.
They caught each other’s gaze, and it felt as the whole earth had stop moving. Finally, Ethan spoke to her.
“Hello.” He said kind of innocent and questionable like.
Theresa said nothing. Ethan tilted his head at her, but she still stood there just as quiet as before.
Ethan stood up and placed the album down on the table with the picture of the little girl still showing.
He walked toward her close enough to smell her sweet perfume. Once again, he spoke to her, again calm and softer.
“Hello” He said lifting a strand of hair from her face.
Theresa stepped backwards and glanced over at the coffee table. She noticed that Ethan was looking at old pictures.
“I came here to see you.” He said capturing her attention.
Theresa looked up at him. His eyes were like a deep ocean of blue. She could easily get lost inside them. But there was something familiar about them. It was if this wasn’t the first time she looked into his baby blues. But where? When? It was very odd.
Before Theresa had a chance to speak to him, Pilar came in with tea. She was surprised that her daughter was up and about. She gave her a sympathetic look because she had forgotten to inquire why Ethan had come to visit.
“Oh Mija, you’re awake. I’m sorry I didn’t come back. Ethan was looking in the picture book at some old pictures of me as the Crane’s housekeeper, and then I went to fix him some tea. Would you like some?”
Theresa looked back up at Ethan, and responded to her mom.
“Yes mama, I would like just a little.” She said never taking her eyes off Ethan.
He smiled at her, and was glad that she decided to join them for tea.
He walked back over to the couch and took a seat after Theresa sat down.
Pilar served both of them tea as Ethan inquired about the girl in the picture.
Theresa’s face went flushed as she recognized herself in the photograph.
“Is this little girl you?” Ethan asked, hoping that it was.
“Umm, yes, that’s me. But I don’t remember taking it.”
“Well, I remember.” Pilar joined in.
“And I think I remember also.” Ethan continued.
Theresa looked at him rather oddly. “How can you remember? I don’t see you in the picture.”
Ethan turned the page, and sure enough there were several other pictures taken of both Ethan and Theresa together in the Crane gardens, only this time, she wasn’t crying. She was smiling, and seemed to be holding on to a small rag doll dressed in a blue and white dress.
“There! Here I am. Do you recognize the doll you’re holding?” Ethan said beaming with pride.
Theresa looked closely at the doll and then fell very silent.
“I gave that doll to you when you came to visit the mansion the week your brothers all went camping with your father. You cried the entire first day you were there, and I asked my grandfather for my allowance early. I ran to the toy store and bought that doll, and gave it to you when you returned with your mother the second day. After that, we became pretty good friends.”
Ethan stared down at the picture unaware that Theresa’s eyes were filling with tears.
“Do you remember?” He said still looking at the picture.
“No, I don’t remember. I’m sorry, excuse me please.”
Theresa stood quickly, and ran out of the room. Both Pilar and Ethan could here her bedroom door shutting.
He then gazed over at Pilar.
“Was it something I said?” He said looking very confused.
Pilar stood up and apologized for her daughter’s behavior. She wasn’t sure why Ethan had stopped by to see her, but she told him that now wasn’t a very good time to meet with her.
Ethan thanked Pilar for the tea and the nice afternoon, and then left the house without another word.
Theresa laid her head down on her pillow with her hands crossed over under the side of her face. Then she reached under her pillow and pulled out her little rag doll with the blue and white dress, and whispered, “I do remember.”
