******************************
Theresa’s dreamed had her mind preoccupied the whole day. For most of the day, she stayed inside Simone’s room packing her clothes. She dreaded going back to school. How could she get through the semester without Ethan?
He had easily become a part of her. His smile, his wit, and his awful sense of humor had invaded her thoughts and dreams. There was no way she could get over him soon.
She stood and walked over to the window. It was such a beautiful summer day. A great day for taking a walk down by the wharf. Her and Ethan had become so familiar with one another there.
They discovered that they were the children who shared their first dance together. That childhood party meant more to them than it did to all the other countless number of children who attended.
Theresa shared her fears of dating, and how her and Steven met at school. Ethan talked about his dreams of starting his own law firm one day, but how he wanted to get as much experience in the field before taking the initial steps.
They simply fell in love with one another. No tricks, no expectations, just good old fashion boy loves girl, and boy get girl’s love.
Theresa’s heart ached knowing that she was going back to school, and probably never seeing Ethan again.
She wanted to tell him, but she was sure that he didn’t want to see her.
“Too many emotional problems.” Theresa said to herself.
She continued to stare out of the window, when there was a knock at the door.
“My dream!” She shouted.
Theresa ran to the door and swung it open.
“Ethan?” She said cheerfully.
The man in front of her had a bouquet of flowers. The most beautiful she had ever seen. The smile on her face could light up a thousand dark rooms.
Her heart skipped a beat as she reached for the flowers.
But it quickly dissolved when she saw the man behind the bouquet.
“OMG! Steven! What are you doing here?” She said quickly letting the flowers go, and walking backwards from her ex boyfriend.
“Terri, is that any way to greet the love of your life?” He said with a very sly smirk on his face, and arms opened wide.
“How dare you! How dare you come here and insinuate what’s in my heart?”
Theresa turned from him and walked towards the window once again.
Steven walked into the room, and closed the door, leaving it ajar.
“Terri.” He said after clearing his throat. “I know you are furious with me, and there is really nothing I could say to make you change your mind. But please, please hear me out.”
Theresa turned and face her fraudulent ex boyfriend. The fire in her eyes that Ethan loved so much was lit, and God help the person who stood before her.
“Now you hear me.” She said pointing a finger at him. “There is nothing you can say that will change my mind about you. So you can just take your flowers and get the hell out of this house right now.”
“Theresa, look, please don’t do this. Just let me explain. I promise, I won’t hurt you again. I was young, and stupid. I didn’t realize what I had before you left me.”
Theresa stood and looked at Steven poor his pathetic heart out to her. He couldn’t read her thoughts, so he continued.
As Steven begged Theresa to take him back, she had another visitor walking up to the room to see her.
Ethan was heading toward the door with a bouquet of flowers, and his very own apology. But he stopped when he heard voices coming from the room.
He stood behind the door, which was ajar.
“Theresa, please tell me you forgive me for being the jerk I was.”
Theresa walked closer to Steven, and Ethan peeked in to see what was happening. Right at that moment, she put her arms around him.
He couldn’t believe she had her arms around that scum. “I’ll kill him if he hurts her again.” Ethan said to himself.
Steven invited the hug and put his arms around her in a very warm embrace.
“Ahhh, Theresa, I knew you would forgive me. I love you so much.”
Ethan, feeling like it was too late for him and Theresa, was about to walk away from the room until he heard her voice.
“And I love…I love…” She stuttered.
“Yes, my love.” Steven responded.
Theresa pulled out of the embrace and said, “I love Ethan.” She said smiling.
“Yessss!” Ethan said quietly to himself with glee.
“Who the hell is Ethan?” Steven demanded to know.
“He’s the most wonderful man that I have ever met. He treats me with the utmost kindness and respect. I don’t know how I would have ever gotten through this summer without him. He’s become my best friend, and the love of my life.
“I just hope it isn’t too late to tell him how I truly feel.”
Theresa looked towards the floor, then back up at Steven.
“It’s over Steven.” She said shaking her head. “There is no way I can ever love you again. I hugged you because I needed closure, so that I could move on to a more healthy and honest relationship. That relationship is with Ethan. He’s the only man for me.”
Right at that moment, Ethan knew what he had to do. He quietly slipped away from the bedroom door, and ran down the stairs.
“Ethan!” Whitney said calling him before he left the house. “Where are you going? Didn’t you talk to Terri?”
“No Whitney! No I didn’t. She had company. I have to go. I have some place I need to be.”
“But aren’t you going to talk to her? You’re not going to let her go back to New York without saying goodbye are you?”
Ethan didn’t know what to say. His eyes were sad because he wanted to go back up those stairs to that room and pull Theresa in his arms. He wanted to tell her how much he loved and cared for her, but he knew that wouldn’t be enough. He had something else planned. Something that his sweet Theresa would never forget as long as she lived.
“I’m sorry Whitney. I just can’t see her now. I have to go. I’m sorry. Please take care of her for me.” And after saying that, Ethan rushed out of the house still clutching the bouquet of flowers.
Not soon after Ethan left, Steven and Theresa came down the stairs.
“OMG, Steven, what are you doing here? Who let you in?”
Steven looked at Terri’s friend and frowned.
“Nice to see you too Whit. And don’t worry about it, I was just leaving.”
“Good!” Whitney said under her breath.
Steven turned and looked at Theresa.
“Well, I tried. I guess we’ll still see each other at school.”
“Whatever Steven. I really think it’s time for you to leave now.”
Steven looked sadly at Theresa, and could truly feel that there was no sign of reconciliation. This Ethan guy must have really stolen her heart away.
He slowly turned to the door, and walked out without saying another word.
After he left, Theresa turned to Whitney smiling. But Whitney’s face wasn’t as cheerful.
“So, what’s new Whitney?” Theresa said happier than she’s been for the last few days.
“Umm, nothing.” Whitney stuttered.
“Whitney, every time you start a sentence with umm, something is wrong. Now tell me what’s on your mind.”
“Well, Ethan was here.”
Theresa perked up. “He was? Well, where did he go? Is he in the kitchen?” Theresa ran into the kitchen calling his name.
When she didn’t see him there, she came back out to Whitney.
“Whit, where is he? He didn’t leave did he?”
“I’m afraid he did honey.”
Theresa looked confused. “But why? Didn’t he come here to see me?”
“Yes, he did. But when he went up stairs…”
Theresa interrupted her friend. “Oh no. He came up there when Steven was up there with me. What if he got the wrong idea and left? Oh no! What did he say Whitney? Please tell me.”
“Well, I asked him if he was going to let you go back to New York without saying goodbye.”
“And…And!” She said waiting Whitney’s answer.
“Well, then he said, he was sorry, and that he couldn’t see you now. Then he said he had to go, and for me to take care of you.”
Theresa looked very sad. How was she ever going to live without Ethan?
“I have to find him!” She said to Whitney.
“Theresa! He could be any where by now. And it’s almost time for us to leave.”
“I’m sorry Whitney. I just can’t go back to New York and leave with Ethan thinking I don’t love him. I promise I’ll be back in time to leave for the station.”
“Terri no! Wait! We only have two hours before we leave!”
But Theresa didn’t hear her friend. She was already out the door in hopes to find Ethan.
