Back in Chicago in Theresa’s apartment
“I can’t believe you agonized over telling me about your acceptance letter from Columbia.”
“What do you mean Ethan. If my memory serves me right, you weren’t too happy about it. Not one bit!”
“That’s not true Theresa. I was happy for you.”
“Hmm hmm Ethan. Let me refresh your memory sweetie.”
FOUR YEARS AGO AT ETHAN'S PRIVATE BEACH HOUSE
“Baby, I've missed you so much.” Ethan said kissing Theresa passionately on the lips. “I don’t know what I would do if we had to be apart like this again. Every morning I got up my mind was on you, and every evening. “I missed these lips.” He said as he continued to kiss her. I missed these arms.” He said rubbing them. “I missed these legs.” He said sitting on the couch and pulling her by the legs upon his lap. “I want you so bad Theresa.”
“I want you too Ethan.” Theresa said kissing him back.
“Did you miss me?”
“You know I did. I thought of you everyday. I talked to you everyday.”
“I know, but, it’s nothing like holding you in my arms and kissing you all night.”
After a few more passionate kisses, Ethan asked her what smelled so good in the kitchen.
“I fixed your favorite dish. I knew a home cooked meal would be just what the doctor ordered.”
“I don’t know what I would do without you Theresa. I love you so much.”
“I love you too Ethan.” She said crinkling her brow.
“There is something I have to tell you.”
“Sure. Come on, let’s talk about it over dinner.”
Theresa and Ethan walked to the kitchen and set the table. After they sat down and began to eat, Ethan noticed that Theresa was very quiet.
“So baby, did you register at Harmony University yet.”
“No Ethan, I haven’t.” She said very softly.
“Well what are you waiting for? Fall semester will be starting very soon.” Ethan said in between bites.
“Well that’s kind of what I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Wait, let me tell you who I saw in New York last week.”
“Who?” Theresa said sounding frustrated.
“Chuck.”
“Oh, really. How is he?”
“He’s find I guess. He was staying at the same hotel as me. He was there for some convention. I kind of avoided him while there. I didn’t know what to say to him. Sorry about me stealing your girl just didn’t sound like good conversation.” Ethan said laughing.
“Ethan don’t be funny. Chuck really liked me.”
“I know. But fate wasn’t in his corner.”
“Speaking of fate”… She said changing the subject.
“Theresa please don’t start with that fate business again. Just tell me what you want to say. We control our destiny, not fate.”
“Well I don’t know about you, but fate had a lot to do with bringing us together you know.”
“No Theresa, what brought us together was the fact that I loved you and you loved me, and the hell with everything else.”
“Don’t say that Ethan.”
“Well it’s true. We love each other and nothing will ever come in between us. Absolutely nothing.”
At that moment Theresa pulled the letter of admissions out of her pocket and handed it to Ethan.
“What’s this.” Ethan said unfolding the wrinkled piece of paper.
“It’s my admissions letter into Columbia College in Chicago, Illinois.”
Ethan read the letter without interruption. He then looked up at Theresa and said,
“This is great Theresa. I knew you would be accepted. Did you call them back and tell them you’re not coming.”
“Not exactly Ethan.”
“What do you mean not exactly. Either you did, or you didn’t.”
“I didn’t.” Theresa said with the crinkle in her brow.
“Well that’s O.K. You can call them in the morning and tell them thank you, but no thank you.”
“I can’t do that Ethan.” Her voice shaky.
“What do you mean you can’t do that!” Ethan’s voiced raised.
Theresa stood up from the table and walked over and put her plate in the sink.
“I already accepted the scholarship to Columbia.” She mumbled
Ethan walked over to where Theresa was standing.
“Turn around Theresa and say that again.” He said with anger in his voice.
Theresa turned and faced Ethan.
“I said I already accepted the scholarship.” She said trembling.
Ethan turned around and walked into the other room with Theresa following.
“How could you Theresa? How could you do this to us?”
“How could I do what Ethan? I haven’t done anything wrong.”
“Yes you did! You just sealed our fate to be apart! I thought you loved me! I guess I was wrong.”
“How can you say that Ethan? I do love you. I’ve loved you ever since I could remember.”
“Well don’t go Theresa! I need you here with me!”
Theresa turned away from him with tears in her eyes.
“I’m sorry Ethan. I have to do this.”
“No you don’t. And you won’t! You are calling the admissions office in the morning and telling them that you made a mistake, and that you are not coming, and that is final.”
Theresa turned around very slowly and glared at the strange man standing in front of her.
“How dare you Ethan Crane. You don’t own me. I make the decisions in my life. Not you! Not anyone.”
“Well your decision is stupid and selfish.”
Theresa looked at Ethan speechless. This reaction from him was not what she had expected.
“Take me home Ethan.”
Ethan stood there for a minute not knowing what to do.
“Take me home now!” Theresa said furious with the way things turned out.
On the way to Theresa’s house both her and Ethan were very quiet. Ethan thought about apologizing, but got angry every time he thought about her leaving him.
Theresa fought back the tears forming in her eyes. She was sure this was it this time, and that her and Ethan would never work this awful turn of events out.
They pulled up to her house and Theresa turned to look at Ethan hoping that he would say something to her. But he just looked straight ahead without a word.
Theresa got out of the car, closed the door and turned toward her house. At that moment she knew she should say something to him.
“Look, Ethan…”
But before she could finish, he drove off leaving Theresa standing there in a very broken-hearted state.
While driving home Ethan felt like he was driving away from his life. He tried to shake the feeling out of his head. Instead of going home he went to the beach house. After cleaning up he went and sat out on the couch and turned on the radio.
“I know this song.” Ethan said to himself. “Where did I hear it from?”
If I’m not in love with you,
What is this I’m going through, tonight.
And if my heart is lying then,
What should I believe in?
Why do I go crazy?
Every time I think about you baby
Why else do I want you like I do
If I’m not in love with you.
Ethan sat there for a moment, and he remembered. The night Theresa, Noah, Gwen, and he showed up at Calentures together, Noah and Gwen went to dance. He and Theresa were at the table alone, and Theresa said that he really didn’t love her because he was still dating Gwen. Ethan argued with her to try and convince her that he did love her, but she didn’t believe him.
When Theresa ran out of the restaurant that night, this song came on the radio while he was driving in his car to find her. He did love her and he was going to find her and prove it. He knew that it wasn’t just infatuation because his heart was truly aching. All he could hear was Faith Hill’s words over the speakers in his car, and it made him more determine to find her. That’s when it dawned on him that Theresa was at the beach house.
Why do I go crazy?
Every time I think about you baby
Why else do I want you like I do?
If I’m not in love with you.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Oh honey, I am so sorry the way things turned out last night. You must have been devastated.” Whitney said driving Theresa to the airport the next morning
“Whitney I cried all night. I thought about calling him, but it hurt me that he didn’t call either. What am I going to do Whit? I was so sure that Ethan would be supportive. I guess I was wrong about him. No one could have ever convince me that he would act like old man Alistair Crane or Julian for that matter.”
“Theresa I’m not sure exactly how Ethan acted, but I’m sure that he loves you. I can tell it when he looks at you. When he sees you, you might as well be the only person in the room. And when you dance, the music follows your beat, and play by your time. You set the pace for what’s good and what’s right.”
“Oh Whit, that is so sweet to say.” Theresa said crying again. “I’m really going to miss you. We have been best friends all our life. It just doesn’t seem right us being apart.”
“I know how you feel Theresa. I’m going to miss you also. I have never had another friend who is quite as optimistic, out going, smart, loving, loyal, and not to mention crazy as you are. I love you.”
“I love you too Whit. We’re sisters through and through. Always and forever.”
After Theresa boarded her plane, her thoughts were on the life she was leaving behind. A life that could have had Ethan in it. What was she going to do without him? She loved him ever since she was a child. And now she was flying to a new life. A life that she believed wasn’t made for her and Ethan.
Theresa sat gazing out of her window. Fresh new tears had dripped silently on her white cotton blouse. She didn’t notice the oohs and ahhs coming from the passengers around her until someone said, “Look, he’s on his knee.”
Theresa turned around and faced the gentlemen kneeling beside her with flowers in one hand, and a small jewelry box in the other.
“I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but I thought I would give it a try.” He said doddering.
“I know I can’t promise a rainbow after every rain, or a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow. I’m sure I can’t promise candy and roses on every anniversary or baby you sure look pretty at the beginning of every date. But there is one thing that I can promise you. I promise that I’ll love you with every beat of my heart and in every step that I take. No one else completes me like you do. You are my heart and my soul. Without you near or far, I can’t breathe, I can’t live, I can’t love. So Theresa Lopez Fitzgerald, will you do me the honor, after you have completed four years at Columbia College, of being Mrs. Ethan Samuel Crane?”
It was really hard to understand what exactly Theresa was saying at that moment through all the tears, sighs, and kisses, but one word was definitely understood.
“Yes Ethan, oh yes. I love you.” She managed through kisses.
“I am so sorry Theresa, please forgive me. I was being selfish and foolish.”
“You’re forgiven Mr. Crane. You’re forgiven.”
Every passenger exploded into applauses as Theresa and Ethan stood there in a very sweet embrace.
“I love you Theresa.”
“I love you too Ethan.”
