Ethan and Theresa rushed in the waiting room of the maternity ward and saw Coach Russell pacing the floor.
"Coach Russell!" They both cried out.
"Theresa! Ethan!" He said walking up to them.
"Coach, how is Whitney?" Theresa said worried.
"She's scared Theresa." He said placing a hand on her shoulder. "She was having trouble breathing when they took her in. Eve and Chad is with her now. My wife should be coming out soon to give me a word on her condition."
"Oh my." Theresa sighed.
Ethan pulled his wife close to him and reassured her that Whitney was going to be fine.
"Listen Theresa, Whitney is going to be all right. She's a fighter and she will not give up. I'm sure that little baby will be fine as well. It's made of Harris blood and you know how strong that is."
"Oh Ethan." She sighed once again.
"Ethan look, about my diary..."
"Theresa let's not talk about that right now. This is not the time nor the place." He hugged her tighter just as Eve came into the room.
"Eve! How's Whitney?" Coach Russell demanded.
Eve hugged her husband.
"The doctor was able to stabilize her breathing, but they are concern for the baby. It has a very weak heart beat."
"No!" Theresa cried out.
"Theresa please don't panic, the doctors are doing everything to make sure that little guy makes it. I'm glad you and Ethan are here. Whitney was asking for you. Come with me and I'll get you prepped to go see her."
"Thank you Dr. Russell."
Theresa kissed her husband as he released her to go and see her friend.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chad sat on the side of his wife's bed and wiped the sweat from her brow.
"Baby do you need anything." He said unsure of what to say to his beautiful wife."
"Yes, honey. I need Theresa. Is she here yet?"
"Yes Whit, here I am." Theresa said entering the room."
Chad stood and walked over and hugged Theresa.
"I'm glad you're here. She's been asking for you."
"Ethan is in the waiting room with Dr. and Coach Russell. Please go and see him."
Chad walked back over to his wife and kissed her forehead and told her that he would be right back.
After Chad left and Theresa sat down on the side of her bed, she grabbed Whitney's hand.
"Hi honey. I heard you've been asking for me."
"Yes Theresa." She said in a very soft hoarse voice. "I wanted to tell you something."
"What is it honey?" Theresa said wiping the sweat from her.
"If anything should happen to me, I want you to promise me that you and Ethan will help Chad through."
"Whitney don't talk like this. You and the baby will be fine. Trust me. You are a fighter, which makes that little one a fighter too. We all love you very much, and you have just about the whole town of Harmony praying for you."
Whitney gave a small smile followed by a loud scream, tightening the grip on Theresa's delicate hands.
"Is it another contraction?"
Whitney took in deep slow breaths, shut her eyes tight, and nodded her head.
"Honey you're doing fine. I'm so proud of you. I love you."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ethan shook Chad's hand when he came into the waiting room.
"How are you holding up man?" He said.
"Ethan, I think I am hanging on by a thread." Chad said wiping the sweat from his head.
"Son you are doing just fine." Coach interrupted. "I'm proud of the job you are doing in taking care of my little girl."
Chad and Coach Russell gave a small hug when a nurse stormed in telling Chad it was almost time.
Chad felt pats on his back as he turned and rushed behind the nurse to return to his wife.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Another contraction. They're two minutes apart now." Theresa said.
Whitney had shot from three centimeters to 10 within seconds.
"O.K. Whitney, here's the thing." The nurse said. "The baby is not quite ready to come out yet. Its head is not in position. What I'm going to need you to do is push when I tell you to, to get the head straight for delivery."
Theresa continued to hold on to a frightened Whitney until Chad came into the room.
"Here Chad, come sit and hold her hand. They're trying to get the baby's head in position for delivery. I'm going to give Ethan and Whit's parents the update."
"Thank you Theresa." Chad said giving her a small peck on the lips.
The last thing Theresa heard before leaving was the nurse saying, "Push Whitney, yes that's it. Push again. Good! Stop! Wait! O.K.! Yes! Let's get her to delivery."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The guests in the waiting room grew.
Simone, Whitney's little sister, and her boyfriend Robert were there. Kay and Evan along with Charity and Miguel. Luis, Sheridan and their two little ones. A married Jessica and Reese with their son Jessy Renae were there as well as Pilar, Martin, Grace and Sam.
Everyone was into their own conversations, and the nurse had to constantly come in to remind them that they were in a hospital.
"So little brother," Ethan said to Evan. "How are you and Kay doing?"
"We're great. Kay is wonderful. I could have never asked for a better girl to marry. You really should get to know her and Jessica. They're both great girls. After all they are your sisters."
"Don't start with me about Sam being my father. That is the last thing I want to think about right now."
"Ethan I think you are being a total jerk concerning Chief Bennett."
"Little brother you have no idea what you're talking about."
"You're wrong Ethan. And stop calling me little brother. I'm an adult. You are the one acting like a child. Just because you find out that Julian is not your father doesn't mean you're not a Crane. You were raised a Crane, and father loves you as if you were his son, but the fact remains that Sam Bennett is your biological father, and you should at least give him a chance."
"Never!" Ethan said angrily and turned and faced a disappointed Sam Bennett.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pilar walked over to where Theresa stood in a crowd and pulled her to the side.
"Terrisita, is it me or is there some tension between you and your husband."
Theresa looked at her mother and wondered how she could be so observant.
"Yes mama, there is a little tension between us. Actually there might be a lot between us."
"What happened Mija?"
"Someone sent him the contents of my entire diary."
"Oh my goodness. What happened?" Pilar said putting her hand to her mouth.
"He walked out on me."
"But you are here together, right?"
"Yes mama, he came home. It was the weirdest thing. When he came home he kissed me like nothing had happened. I know I shouldn't feel like this but way back in the back of my head I'm not sure if he has forgiven me. What if he wants to seek revenge and the only way he can do that is if he pretends to still love me before he does something major."
"Terrisita, you are very imaginative. Ethan is a very honorable man, who loves his wife very much. I just don't believe he would do something to hurt you. I helped raise him. He is an honest, forgiving, and loving person. You can count on that."
"Thank you mama." Pilar hugged her daughter to reassure her.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sam walked up to Ethan as Evan rejoined Kay and the others.
"Chief Bennett, there is nothing you can say to me to make me change what you just heard. I will never accept you as my father."
"Look son..."
"Don't call me that, I am not your son. Never will be."
"Ethan look, I was surprised when I found out also. I had to come to grips with the situation of finding out the truth with you being my son."
"Look Chief Bennett, I don't want to be rude, but I can't say it any other way. I don't want you as my father, I never will."
"But Julian is not..." Ethan cut him off pointing a finger at his chest.
"Don't you say a damn thing about my father. You could never be half the man he is and don't you forget that."
Ethan walked off leaving a stunned Sam standing alone.
"Hi dear!" Theresa said as Ethan walked up to her and Pilar.
"Are you all right?"
Ethan hugged his wife and whispered in her ear.
"I'm O.K.! Sam and I had words, but I don't want to talk about it."
"O.K. baby." Theresa said hugging him tighter.
The whole waiting room area got quiet when they saw Chad enter with a solemn look on his face.
Dr. Russell, Coach, Ethan and Theresa walked closer to him. They could tell that he'd been crying. His eyes were blood shot, and sweat was pouring from his head.
Every one hugged their significant other and waited Chad's words.
"The doctors worked real hard in there. And Whitney remained the champ she is until the very end."
There were sighs and gasps as they waited for him to continue.
"When she delivered the baby, it stopped breathing and Whitney flat lined."
"Oh my God! Whitney! My baby!" Eve screamed.
Theresa buried her head in Ethan's chest, thinking it wasn't possible that they lost both Whit and the baby.
"Wait Dr. Russell, the doctors revived Whitney. She's fine."
"Oh thank you God." Eve and many others in the waiting room called out.
"And the baby?" Ethan said.
"The doctors did everything to help the baby to breath on it's own. At first they were going to put it on oxygen, but they didn't get a chance to."
Everyone looked at Chad as he started to cry once again.
"By some miracle, God smiled down on the Harris family tonight. And I would like to report that Chad and Whitney Harris have a 7 pound 7.4 ounces bouncing baby boy."
"Chad Jerome Harris Jr."
