Slasher film to have local debut

PITMAN -- The award-winning director who raised a few eyebrows in this quiet suburban borough has returned to shock again.

Mark Goles screened his sold-out premier of "Cheerleader Massacre" at the Broadway Theatre two years ago. Now he's is back with another horror show to shock movie-goers.

This time, Goles shares screenplay efforts for "Thorn" -- along with co-directing and production duties -- with South Jersey native Katie Taylor Bullock, who also stars in the film.

On March 25, the Borough of Pitman will go Hollywood when "Thorn" premiers at the Broadway Theatre amid limousines, red carpets, and post-premiere celebrations.

Goles' fans say that "Thorn" is "the silent sequel to Halloween 6," seeking to answer questions about the "mark of the thorn" found on the wrist of horror movie slasher Michael Myers.

The Philadelphia native said he and Bullock began researching the symbol because it was not explained in the film series. From there, the two wrote the screenplay.

The movie takes the "mark of the thorn" further, said Bullock.

"The basic concept is that it is an evil symbol, but it also can be used for good depending on who has it and how they decide to use the power behind it," Bullock said.

"The film is a lot more serious than 'Cheerleader Massacre,'" added Goles, who plays a firefighter in the film.

"The movie is a mix between 'Backdraft' and the 'Halloween' movies. It's psychological horror. It's really going to be different."

Bullock, 19, of Erial, Gloucester Township, makes her big screen debut as the lead character "Stephanie."

The acting was hard, she said, especially in the rape scene, but directing and producing were even tougher at times because of "creative differences" which had to be worked out.

The result? "I hope audiences are scared," said Bullock.

Goles, who wrote and directed "Cheerleader Massacre" I and II, said he wanted to return to the historic Broadway Theater here in Pitman one last time before his production company, Dyers Eve Films and Dramatized Entertainment, heads for the West Coast.

The company has recently inked a deal with Artisan Entertainment.

Expressing his appreciation to the staff at the Broadway, Goles said, "They have helped us out in the past with promoting 'Cheerleader Massacre' and we know they have had some problems. We wanted to help," he added. "We wanted to go back and have one last hurrah" before moving to California.

Goles' other films include "Divine Intervention" and "Countdown To Extinction: Virgins' Blood."

"Divine Intervention" won best director, best dramatic short, and best lead in a short film at the Los Angeles Underground Film Festival, Goles said.

Two weeks before the curtain rises for the official premier of "Thorn," Goles and cast members will be at Superhero City Comics and Cards, 508 Hurffville-Cross Keys Road in Washington Township, at 6 p.m. on March 4.

Clips from the film will be shown, and tickets will be on sale for the Pitman premiere. An autograph session is scheduled as well.
