At least Mal admits to liking women.....Simon seems overly nervous around Kaylee and I suspect Vera is about as close as Jayne has ever come to an emotional attachment to anything female.

Besides,all the snarking back and forth between Jayne and Simon is a lot more interesting than most of the other dialogue between the characters,hee hee!
