In reference to your second comment, I just watched "Ariel" for the second time and didn't notice Jayne saying he can't read. Where was that in the ep.? He did say he never went to school or something like that, but didn't say he couldn't read.

Also, there's that scene where he's trying to write his medical jargon on a piece of paper and Simon takes it away from him. Why would he know how to write something down, and what would be the point of doing so, if he can't read?
