Subject: Okay, how dumb are we supposed to be? (Spoilers through 3rd aired ep)

My biggest problem with the show continues to be this Western motif, with the big honkin" "LOOK! IT'S A WESTERN AND IT'S SCI-FI!!!!" sign on it.

But it isn't, innit?

What's with the bonnets? And the gender garb that is better suited to the Victorians? Is there supposed to be some sort of pioneering influence on cowboy hats? Prostitution is legal but women as chattel is barely winked at? After several hundred years of Communist and Demnocratic gender equality, we've slipped back into "womenfolk"???

Y'know, I could have picked up the "frontier spirit" stuff if they were wearing something else. For instance, we're being given all sorts of Chinese influences, but none on day-to-day garb? This is the best a costume or production designer can do - "Gunsmoke" with the occasional appearance of a spaceship?

We've got a show where every scene planetside is a huge distraction.

And more specifically, for "Mrs. Reynolds," what the hell was she doing in what had to be an insular little community, and why would she have been there - why would any of the bad guys expect her to come in contact with space piracy material? What, they have trained personnel hanging out with each and every backwater community on a hundred planets? And no one noticed her marrying their guest, following their customs although she was an outsider, and no one was bright enough to think maybe he wouldn't know what was going on? These are settlers, not aboriginals (and I'd give aboriginals more credit than that)!

I did enjoy the episode, since the problem areas were peripheral, but there's dark times ahead...
