1. Are you watching Firefly primarily because of
a. Joss' track record.

2. Are you a fan of Star Trek? Yes

If so, what do you like and dislike about the franchise? Feel free to talk about individual series, and the movies separately or to lump them together.

I like the idealization of the potentials of humanity shown. And warp drive. I dislike the fact that the ensign always get killed. And the fact that it idealizes the potentials of humanity.

3. Are you a fan of Star Wars? What do you like and dislike about it.

Yes. Love the mythology, the hero's journey etc and hyperdrive. Dislike the wooden acting. And bad sequel (or is that prequel?) trilogies.

4. Are you a fan of Babylon 5? No. Are all 'deep' sci-fi TV shows doomed to both low ratings, and to being pushed to the margins of broadcasting? Can't say.

5. If you like sci-fi, what are some of your other favorites, TV, books or movies?

Asimov's Foundation stuff, Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land. Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow. Bladerunner. Alien. Oh, and does anyone remember Space 1999? I loved that show.

6. Westerns have mostly faded from the tv screen. Do you have any old favorites? Do you have any favorite Western movies? Do you think the genre is worn out?

I used to watch them when I was really young - Bonanza etc. Joss has shown that genres don't wear out - it's how you use them.

7. I would say that Buffy and Angel are about complex relationships and tearing down fixed ideas about good and evil. Assuming Firefly gets the chance to develop do you think it will follow the same pattern?

I'm not sure yet - I've only seen one ep of Firefly.

8. Play Joss for a moment. Where do you think the meatiest potential parts of Firfly lie?

People dealing with a world where agents are not entirely good nor evil, the shifting alliances and compromises necessary in such a world, how a moral/ethical person behaves in this world and what those consequences are. The conflict between one's roots and one's past and one's current set of values. And, keep the aliens out but tone down the western cliches about gender/dress etc.
