I wouldn't write Firefly off yet.
Tim Goodman (the writer of the Article)didn't like the show to begin with, so it isn't a surprise that he says it will get the axe.

Moreover he called the two-hour pilot, Serenity, murky and boring. Was he watching the same pilot I saw, because I found Serenity to be an excellent introduction to the characters and the sensibilities of the show.
