Subject: Thanks everybody, for defending Joss re: faith
In reply to: Scroll 's message, "Who wrote Ep 1.4? Also, my review (spoilers 1.4, BtVS 7.4, AtS 4.1)" on 19:54:06 10/18/02 Fri

I appreciate what everybody is saying about Joss paralleling faith in the Bible and in Jayne. My thanks for explaining it more clearly to me what "Firefly's" take on faith and belief was.

Maybe I was just reacting with my gut because I find the fallibility/infallibility of the Bible to be a touchy subject. I did understand (somewhat) what Joss was trying to say about faith -- that it transforms you, becoming something bigger than what came before. Which I think is a lovely description of faith. My worry isn't that Biblical events aren't supported by science. I don't really care if science says it's impossible to split the Red Sea, because miracles are by definition impossible happenings. But I do worry when people use scientific theory to say that the Bible can't possibly be right or "logical" and therefore doesn't mean anything. Which clearly Joss wasn't trying to do so... good on him!

Thanks again for clarifying this for me, TeacherBoy, Rob, and HonorH. Also, thanks Karen for giving the name of the writer. I've never seen "The Tick" but I heard it was cancelled way before its time!
