I'll concur with Rob: I think this was the best episode so far. I loved the intercut flashbacks and the non-linear story--classic Tim Minear writing. I do need to publicly voice my hatred for my local FOX affiliate whose signal cut off twice for a few minutes each during the show. Oh well, I got most of it anyway.

The characters are developing nicely. The Firefly crew members seem very real to me--I feel like these are people I know; maybe more real than even the Buffy gang. I still want to see flashbacks that explain how Shepherd, Simon, and River came to join the crew; how Mal and Zoe first met; and more on how Wash and Zoe hooked up.

I'm developing more respect for Mal as a leader. He seems, in a word, honest. That seems like a strange way to describe someone who works as a smuggler for a living, but it seems to fit. What you see is exactly what you get. He is a very direct, straight-ahead person who doesn't bullshit people. His methods are blunt and completely devoid of finesse; but his expectations are always _very_ clear and he doesn't ask his crew to do things that he is unwilling to do. These qualities would make him a terrible politician but are things I've always appreciated in the few bosses I've had that displayed them.

Can I just say that I loved both Jayne's and Kaylee's "origin" stories. Ha! Those made my week.

Anyway, that's all I have for substantive (or not) commentary right now. More later
