Subject: My biggest problem with "Objects in Space"....
In reply to: Scroll 's message, "River as a Goddess Figure (Objects in Space spoilers)" on 21:24:44 12/14/02 Sat

I felt a bit let down at the end of "OIS" because I felt that River's solution to the problem of Early was too simple and left too much to chance. Whatever happened to the spooky young girl who offed three guards in seconds back in "War Stories"??

Up until Early got popped off the hull plating by Mal,I felt that River had been playing an intriguing game of cat and mouse with her bounty hunter. But since when does the cat let someone else take the mouse?? Given the terrifying talk that Early was spouting all through his trip throughout Serenity,it was clear this was a person that was more than willing to use deadly force to get his target,so why backdown and have Mal become the actual enforcer of the supposed death of Early? (yeah, odds are good he can recall the ship to him-the giveaway being the nonchalant manner he glided down to Serenity's hull in the first place. The man had no fears that his ship could ever drift away on him;thus his calm demeanour once the Serenity moved off at the end.)

I'm not advocating that River blast him out of the skies using his own weaponry but it would have been much more believable to me if she had used his own engines to give him a push off the plating or at the very least tractored him off the hull (oooo, nice image just now of her leaving him tethered to the ship in a slow tumble) then left him to his own devices while she went back to the crewmembers on board Serenity. After all, what if Mal didn't get the upper hand out there in the darkness?? It was leaving too much to chance,IMHO. I felt Joss backed off of letting us see River as more than just a really bright empath/telepath who can outthink her pursuer-he pulled away from adding to her reputation as a killer and instead let Mal do the dirty work. Why?

Otherwise,a fun episode.
