Subject: Re-watching Firefly (spoilers for season)

I thought watching my tapes of Serenity and The Train Job and Bushwhacked would make me feel better, but it just made me sad and angry at Fox.

But - a few things I noticed and a few other comments.

Family structure on Serenity
Couples
Cast and Crew
Joss

The family structure I see on the show is Mal as the father, Inara is the mother, Jayne and Kaylee are the kids, and Wash and Zoe are the aunt and uncle. Book becomes the grandpa, and River at times is another daughter (sister to Kaylee), but I haven't figured out exactly where Simon and River fit in.

Couples
Besides the obvious Wash and Zoe, we see in 'Serenity' that Inara has feelings for Mal as Mal does for her. But, I got the impression that Mal thinks he isn't good enough for Inara (calling her a whore is his weird reaction - we also see that he understands that others have great respect for her) and doesn't realize that she has feelings for him (Our Mrs. Reynolds).

The other 'couple wanna-be' is one-sided. Jayne likes Kaylee (he sat nervously outside the infirmary window when she was wounded) and gets upset - and nasty - when she obviously likes Simon. Jayne is the 'tough on the outside to protect the gentle inside,' immature, tactless one - with similarities to Cordelia and Spike. And like Spike, he wants to be alpha puppy, but there's a bigger dog in town.

Jayne is also misunderstood by Mal. In effect, Mal opens the door for Jayne's later betrayal by not believing in him from the get go.

And Mal. At the battle of Serenity Valley, he had faith, spoke of angels and kissed a cross he wore around his neck. He lost his faith in that battle and six years later he doesn't even want grace spoken in his presence. He believes he is a bad man, but Kaylee sees past that and tells him he is a good man.

I'm so sad that we may not get to see what becomes of these wonderfully drawn characters.

Cast and crew.
But, as dismayed as we fans are at the cancellation and bad treatment from Fox, think of the cast and crew - without jobs right before Christmas. I suspect this show was a break for some of the actors, and I had read that some of the crew had come over from Buffy (and maybe Angel) looking for a new challenge, and are now out of work. All because the suits at Fox are idiots. A better New Year for all of them.

And Joss. His characters have spoken this line twice that I remember "Wheel never stops turning" (Riley in AYW and Mal in Serenity). And so, within days, Joss' latest 'creative' baby was cancelled and his first 'real' baby was born. "Wheel never stops turning. You're up, you're down…'
I hope Serenity flies again. Damn Fox.

And Joss - you have invaded my dreams.
