Given the awe that Inara provoked in the townspeople, I'd place her social status as high and her choice of clientele seems based as much on class as whether they're nice or not. All of which inclines me toward a Geisha or Chinese-style courtesan analogy, despite the one night stand aspect. I don't know much about the status of the Greek courtesans, though. Were they respected? Did they specialize in the well-born?

Speaking of class, there's a definite element of, if not class conflict, class difference, on this show. It's not overt, but Simon and Inara rank higher socially than the other members of the crew and it affects how they relate to them. Even the sheriff's leniency toward Mal's actions seems based on a "we're all just working stiffs out here" attitude. An Alliance officer wouldn't have released Mal, even knowing he had brought the medical supplies back.

And yes, I'm sure they wanted to kill the show, for whatever reasons.
