The Train Job is something of a pot boiler. Whatever it was supposed to the like was lost when the FOX network here refused to give Joss two hours on one night to show Serentiy until the show was on its last legs. The Train Job had to be written to serve as a first ep. with all the character intros after it had been planned as a later episode. Clearly it was a classic case of miscommunication, Joss thought he had a two-hour slot if he wanted it. The network decided that the show following in the schedule had greater potential for big ratings, so they told Joss at the last minute they didn't like the two-hour pilot. No doubt they weren't crazy about the less than heroic Mal as hero, and there were other points that were changed in Serenity before it aired. But, here in the US it's fairly well accepted that by showing the questionable The Train Job first FOX esstianally doomed its own show and its ratings for that time slot for the year. Frankly Joss is a little out of his element in Sci-Fi (witness the solar system gaff), and for us old timers who remember classic westerns, the ME writing staff just didn't know enough about that genre either to keep from sounding foolish at times. It wasn't all the FOX Network's fault the show failed. But, the first episode shinanningans meant it had no chance to correct its weaknesses.
