I burned with fire
Pondered steps touch icy ground,
ancient memories, spring anew,
deep inside, a teen at play,
outward markings stretch that view.
My fifties tweed fits looser now,
post-war vigor, long subdued,
shrunken frame, dishevelled hair,
lurching torso, loud and rude.
Yet in my prime I burned with fire,
bright as diamond set in coal,
life and soul where e’er I trod,
amid my people, brave and bold.
Trudging now past unknown faces,
Auld aquaint’s, near dead and gone,
see my youth in other folk
who sneer and mock, the clothes I don.
Pangs of envy? slightly taunt me,
just these kids, my last desire,
take ‘em backward to my heyday,
look at me! “I burned with fire”.
