The following is a poem, from the BBC competition the 'nations favourite poem', from 1995. Whilst Kiplings 'If' was the official winner.... the following became by proxy the unnoficial winner.... as although it was outside of the official competition, the sheer number of people who voted for it... meant it was included in a prime position. It is by an unknown poet, and was found on a dead British soldier, murdered in Northen Ireland. It always strikes a particular chord with me, as one of my best school friends, was also murdered in a similar manner during the troubles.

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die.
