Native Americans and the War
A. Code Talkers – spoke a secret language over radio & telephone
B. Civilians
1. more than 70,000 young people left to serve in the military
2. most Indians had to return to reservations after the war

Wartime Life and Culture
A. Economic Good Times
1. people had a little extra money to spend on books, theater, movies, magazines, radio, and more
B. Fighting for Future Prosperity
1. advertisers and government encouraged Americans to support the war
2. troops justified their fighting by telling themselves they were making life more comfortable for people at home
C. USO
1. they hired women to spend time with lonely soldiers in dance clubs when they were not fighting
2. hundreds of thousands of male teachers & professors left to go to the military
a. this caused a shortage of teachers for several communities
3. many students (mostly male, but some female) left school to enlist in the military or work in the jobs others left behind


The Pacific Offensive
A. by 1942 the Japanese had forced General Stilwell & American troops out of Burma
B. Burma Road (Ledo Road/Stilwell Road)
1. 1943 – Stilwell led Chinese, Indian, & American troops back through Burma
a. they made a road and pipeline across the mountains into China
C. Battle of Leyte Gulf
1. October 20, 1944 – General MacArthur and troops landed on Leyte Island in the Philippines
2. American seemed to be winning
3. Japanese did not give up
4. American seized Iwo Jima but the Marines lost over 20,000 men
D. Okinawa
1. for weeks the Japanese sent kamikaze planes against American and British ships
2. the U.S. and it’s allies suffered about 50,000 casualties
3. finally they captured Iwo Jima
4. Japanese lost over 100,000 men
