I. John Kennedy
A. election of 1960
i. won for democrats by slight popular vote (49.9 to Nixon’s 49.6) but a wider electoral vote (303 to 219)
a. at 43, he was the youngest president ever
B. “New Frontier”
i. most progressive program since the New Deal
a. won approval of tariff reductions and tax cuts to promote economic growth
C. Kennedy assassinated
i. killed nov. 26th, 1936 by marxist Lee Harvey Oswald
a. Oswald was killed 2 days later by Jack Ruby, a Dallas nightclub owner
ii. many people believe there is a conspiracy behind the assassination

I. A National Commitment
A. Kennedy’s legislation
i. he introduced a series of new legislative proposals prohibiting segregation in “public accommodations”
B. the March on Washington
i. to generate support for the legislation, a march on Washington was organized w/ 200,000 members, and in the end, the support of Kennedy
a. MLK jr. gives his “I Have A Dream” speech
C. the bill is passed
ii. after Lyndon Johnson applied public and private pressure, congress passed the most comprehensive civil rights bill in the nation’s history

I. Black Power
A. black power suggested a move away from interracial cooperation, and toward increased awareness of racial distinctiveness
i. the idea of instilling racial pride in African Americans who lived in a society the portrayed blacks as inferior to whites
D. the divide of the civil rights movement
i. traditionally, civil rights groups worked w/ sympathetic whites
a. as this wore on; blacks became agitated with the slow civil progression and moved toward more violent ways
b. the most alarming group to come from this new attitude was the Black Panthers
- they wore weapons openly and freely
- promoted the idea that even if they had to use violence, they would defend other blacks
