I. The First Indochina War
A. after WWII, the question of what to do w/ Vietnam rose
i. France appealed to America to help them once again gain control of the country (they had control prior to WWII)
ii. a political party in Vietnam also appealed to America for help
a. the Vietminh were led by communist Ho Chi Minh
b. Ho began writing president Truman in hopes that America would help his country gain independence, but Truman never received the letters
- at the same time, France was appealing to America saying that if France does not get control over Vietnam, their economy will collapse
c. since Truman was deeply committed to the European revival; he supported the French, but never took much action to help
B. the French move in to Vietnam
i. at first, the French had no problem asserting authority, and drove Ho Chi Minh to the countryside
a. the French then established a somewhat independent nation under the control of Bao Dai, a former Vietnamese leader
- even though bao was in power, the nation remained largely under French control
ii. after some time, Ho began taking large parts of the countryside
a. the French asked America for aid
- after recognizing the Bao Dai regime, America sent military and economic aid to the French in Vietnam
C. the battle of Dien Bien Phu
i. DBP was a small site in the northwest part of Vietnam where a large battle between the French and Vietnamese was fought
a. the French were sieged upon and despite America’s help, the French left Vietnam defeated

I. The Tet Offensive
A. on the Vietnamese new year, on Jan. 31, 1967, (or Tet), the Vietnamese led a major offensive against Americans
i. many Americans had now seen images of war and ultimately disapproved of it
ii. after fighting the Viet Cong in a long battle, America had won victory over the regime
a. despite the victory, American opposition to war doubled and Johnson’s approval rating slipped to 35%, the lowest of any president since Harry Truman
