The New Left
A. Sources of the New Left
1. inspired by Civil Rights Movement
2. children of radical parents, many who were members of the Old Left
3. members were drawn toward Marxist theories
B. Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)
1. made of college students from middle-class backgrounds
2. expressed their beliefs in Port Huron Statement
C. Free Speech Movement (planned march in Berkeley)
1. gained national attention
2. almost 3/4 of the students participated
3. immediate issue was right for students to pass out literature and recruit for political issues
b. this started a decade of campus turmoil all over the country
D. People's Park
1. some students wanted to build a park in a vacant lot
2. university administration did not approve of it
3. a week of sometimes violent conflicts
E. Violence
1. students were rarely violent, however as time went on they became more so
a. "Weathermen"
-responsible for some cases of arson and bombing
2. student activists tried to ban military recruiters & ROTC
3. they also attacked corporations that were producing weapons for war
4. opposed the draft
5. many people fled to Canada & Sweden
-they returned in 1977 when president Carter issued a pardon to draft resisters

A. Many groups tried to stay true to their culture
B. Cultural Pluralism
1. cultural movement known as “multiculturalism”
a. challenged “Eurocentric basis of American education and culture


The Abortion Controversy
A. 1960’s – 1970’s – women spoke up about rape, sexual abuse, & wife beating
B. Roe vs. Wade
1. abortion banned from 1900’s -1960’s throughout most of the country
2. court decided that it would be woman’s choice during first trimester


Vietnamization
A. Henry Kissinger
1. Nixon appointed him special assistant for national security affairs
2. Nixon & Kissinger set out to find a solution to stalemate in Vietnam
B. Lottery
1. only a limited number of people would be drafted
C. Consequences of “Vietnamization”
1. 1969 – Nixon reduces number of American ground troops in Vietnam
2. reductions continued until 1972
3. vietnamization helped to quiet domestic opposition to war
4. Nixon and Kissinger never found solution to stalemate


Domestic Initiatives
A. Nixon’s attempts
1. Nixon called middle-class people the “silent majority”
2. unsuccessfully attempted to persuade Congress to pass legislation prohibiting forced busing to desegregate schools
3. forbade Department of Health, Education, & Welfare from cutting off federal funds from school districts that failed to comply to integrate
A. Dismantling the “Great Society”
1. 1973 – abolished Office of Economic Opportunity
2. Nixon planned to replace the current welfare system with the Family Assistance Plan
a. guaranteed all American families an annual income of $1,600 in federal grants
b. many liberals applauded the proposal
c. the House approved it, but the Senate did not
