-U.S. supported the Shah of Iran
-Islamic clergy opposed the Shah's effort to modernize and westernize a fundamentalist society
-the Shah feld the country
-U.S. stepped in
-religious leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini hated the U.S.
-wanted the Shah back in exchange for the U.S. hostages
-53 American were hostages for a year
*Soviet invade
-Afghanistan invaded
-Carter imposed series of economic sanctions on Russians
-U.S. did not attend 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow b/c of it\
*Carter's Falling Popularity
-economic troubles and internationaol crisies created frustration and anxiety w/ the president

Regan and the World
-relations w/ the Soviet Union was still chilly w/ Reagan the 1st yrs.
-prez. spoke harshly of the Soviet regime for supporting terrorism
*SDI
-"Star Wars"
-we claimed we had lasers/satellites that could provide a shield against incoming missiles
-making nuclear war obsolete
-S.U. said that this would escalte the arm race to a dangerous level
-we were in a movement to have a "nuclear freeze"
*Regan Doctrine
-was to have new activism in the 3rd world countries
-we put troops in some countries(peace keepers)
-then in Lebenon marines were targeted for a terorrist attack
-prez. pulled out the troops
*Combating Terorrism
-the administration spoke bravely about its resolve to punish terorrism

Reagan and GorbaCHEV
-regan skeptical about the soviet leader but then realized he was sincere
-gorbachev was soviet
-they had a summit meeting together
-gorbachev proposed a 50% reduction in nuclear arms
-they had disputes over the SDI program
-signed a treaty eliminating american and soviet intermediate-range nuclear forces in Europe
-soviet ended his military involvment in Afghanistan

The Election of 1988
-Democrats: Michael Dukakis: 3 term govener of Mass., dull campaigner
-Republican: then VIce President George Bush
-Bush's campagin attacked Dukakis
-he tied Dukakis to idenitfing with the liberals
-most negative campaign in the 20th century
-Bush won but took few republicans into office with him
-Democrats retained majorities in both houses of Congress

Emergance of the New Right
-evangelical christans important part of the new right
-by late 1970's there were right-wing think tanks, consulting firms,lobbyists, foundations, and scholary centers
*Ronald Reagan
-had to do with the revival
-he wanted to take over for Barry Goldwater
*Ford
-prez. ford played a role in the rise of the new right
