Subject: Common Status

I think that we are going to have to take baby steps towards building the FC. The first thing that I think that can be done, while the nations remain sovereign, is the re-creation of a common status for citizens. Until the late 1940's, we were all just British Subjects. From the late 1940's to the mid 1970's, we were all citizens of our own countries and British Subjects. Since the 1970's, we have only been citizens of our countries. Even British people are now described as 'citizens' rather than 'subjects.

We can easily create a new status alongside our current national citizenships, similar to what existed between the late 1940's and the mid 1970's. We probably can't go back to being called British Subjects (though that would be great), so how about being called 'Crown Commonwealth Citizens' as the next best thing? This would apply only to countries where the Queen is sovereign and all Crown Commonwealth Citizens can travel visa-free to each others' countries. British people would be British Citizens, European Citizens and Crown Commonwealth Citizens. Canadians would be Canadian Citizens and Crown Commonwealth Citizens. The same would apply to all the others if they agreed to it.

The only problem is that all governments in the Crown Commonwealth would have to agree to it for it to take effect. Though, it could still work even if only some of them agreed to it. However, it does not diminish national sovereignty, which is important in the first stages towards federation.

I think we should make this one of our earlier goals and priorities.

I agree that it is a good thing to work for, JIm, but when you say that "we can easily create a new status alongside our current national citizenships" I wonder exactly what your concept of "easy" involves. Easy like circumnavigating Australia in a bathtub?

"We" can't do anything other than try to get the word out, which is what we are doing.
