Worse still, the brass lion thing looks like the things on the stairs of the art-deco fitness club on Hampstead Way. What it does demonstrate, however, is that the imperial sentiment was far from dead by 1945. Indeed, it is arguable that the War led to a recrudescence of our enthusiasm for the far-flung which was only killed by a combination of the Americans and Europeans in the 1960s.
