] Date Posted: 12:48:35 01/20/05 Thu In reply to: Ian (Australia) 's message, "sorry, wrong question" on 12:07:01 01/20/05 Thu The problem with the Conservative attitude to the EU is that their party is not united on the issue. I feel they are as skeptical about the EU as they feel they can get away with, without a number of MPs crossing the floor like the idiot whose name escapes me did this week. You would then have the has-beens of Heseltine and Clarke (who despite being collectively responsible for the Conservatives most unpopular policies in the last Government, seem to be held in high esteem by the media) polluting the airwaves with their Europhile nonsense, and creating more damage to the party. Despite the fact that they seem to be between a rock and a hard place, I agree that they should come off the fence and declare that a referendum on withdrawal from the EU would be undertaken, should they form a Government. This would put the UKIP threat out of business, and would force those undecided Britons into a choice between a Federal Europe, or out of Europe. I think this would be a positive psychological development amongst the electorate. Their policy of “In Europe, not run by Europe” is contradictory, unachievable, and frankly farcical. I believe they know this, but they are too scared of the Labour propaganda machine to come out and say so. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
