] Date Posted: 20:56:12 12/27/04 Mon I think everyone should take the time to remember those who have died in the Asia Tsunami disaster. An estimated 24000 people are dead so far, with many more likely. Some of these countries(Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives) are Commonwealth Countries. May God help them, and may we remember them, our Commonwealth Brothers, and help them in any way we can. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |

Date Posted: 22:40:09 12/27/04 Mon on an almost unimaginable scale, certainly in my living memory. It just serves to remind us how we are all in the hands of the power of nature, and how such petty differences between peoples are virtually unimportant in the grand scheme of things. My thoughts are with all individuals and families who are affected. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 01:49:51 12/28/04 Tue This is awful news. Especially so close to Christmas. Of the seven most affected countries, five are Commonwealth members: Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Maldives and Sri Lanka. I pray that all members of the Commonwealth can work together to help those in need and that warning systems can be put in place to give greater warning if such an event happens again. Date Posted: 12:09:14 12/29/04 Wed If we had greater Commonwealth co-operation, the Indian Ocean would be on its way to being one of the world’s most vibrant zones of democracy and development, led by closer ties between Australia, India and South Africa. The ocean is bordered by 13 Commonwealth countries (Australia, South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Mauritius, Seychelles, Maldives, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Malaysia) and these are bordered by a further 10 Commonwealth countries (Singapore, Brunei, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland and Lesotho). This is by far the greatest concentration of Commonwealth presence on the planet, and should be a proving ground for cooperative development strategies. Instead – as is most painfully the case in Zimbabwe – it has become a proving ground for irrelevance, cowardice and the path of least resistance. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 15:47:12 12/30/04 Thu As the present Commonwealth organisation comprises 30% of the world's population, it cannot hope to be any more effective than the UN when dealing with difficult issues. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
