But Darwin was the first to say, "sod this for a game of soldiers" and go out and actually collect enough evidence, and write it down in such logical terms, that no-one could contradict the theory of evolution any more. And whether or not he was the greatest ever Commonwealth citizen, he is certainly the most famous and important person to come from Shropshire! Unless you count Robert Clive, I suppose...
