The maps showing the British Empire development from 1650 to 1943 will show British territory in scarlet red. The maps showing the Commonwealth today will show it in pink. Date Posted: 00:58:10 11/13/04 Sat Perhaps I shouldn't admit this... but I chose my British Empire map, which hangs in a gilt frame over my desk, from the inter-war years, when it was at its biggest, connecting the Cape with Calcutta, never mind Cairo. I know it's a bit pathetic, but I just like the rich blotches of red, like an atlas over which some careless person has spilled a glass of fine claret. It also has a small roundel at the botton with H.I.M. George V.'s portrait in it, with the legend, "God Save the King-Emperor" under it. Over the Arctic, the pointless expanses of snow have been replaced with the phrase, "Union is Strength". Looking at it now, I am struck with the impression that I am about as politically correct as Norman Tebbit. How can I atone for this? [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 22:38:32 11/14/04 Sun That's quite good, but I prefer the post-WW1 Empire maps, with the Cape linked to Cairo and the Middle Eastern Empire linking Cairo through Jerusalem and the Transjordan to Iraq and thence through southern Iran (informal empire rather than official colony) to India and thence through Burma and Malaya to Singapore. Also, you can get a map from 1905 from www.amazon.co.uk... it's not quite so red, but it has funky pictures of all the peoples of the empire along the top and bottom: in the centre, a Scot and and Englishman either side of a shield emblazoned with the Jack, and all the subject peoples spread out to their left and right. Date Posted: 14:09:25 11/16/04 Tue There was a 1919 map of the world for sale on e-bay which showed Egypt in red as part of a continuous unbroken strip of red stretching down to the Cape of Good Hope, when the Empire was at its maximum extent. This would have been ideal for you. If I had known earlier, I could have alerted you to it and you could have bought it. Unfortunately, it has sold. Go on to e-bay and type in British Empire and quite a lot of good stuff comes up. There are plenty of old atlases and maps from time to time. Check it periodically. In the meantime, I suggest that you go to the Commonwealth History page on the FCS Canada site and download the 1920 map. You can then blow it up large on a large sheet of paper.
