So, the Government have rejected the voice of reason from the only sane people left in the Westminster hierarchy, and have decided to proceed with the lunacy of banning hunting with hounds.

Tony Blair will throw a bone to his backbenchers with the bizarre invocation of the Parliament Act, to guarantee the passage of this most trivial, iniquitous and bigoted piece of legislation.

This has seriously damaged the credibility of our Parliament, and of our country. By enforcing this farcical and flagrant abuse of power, the Government has made a laughing stock of our values of tolerance and respect for minorities, thus provoking outrage and shame in equal measure on my part.

Tony Blair’s regime has made a mockery of our Parliamentary democracy, our “independent” civil service, and of our Cabinet Government, where his ministerial brown shirts have been relegated to ineffectual yes-men who do his bidding.

With the rate that this Government is becoming a one man show, I feel that if this regime is not dispensed with at the next election, it may be the last one we are able to vote in. We are witnessing the death of our traditional values, where we are entering a new world of metropolitan fascism. We are in the hands of the philistines.

A friend of mine who studied History at the Soviet Socialist Republic of Balliol College, Oxford, told me some time back that the Undergraduate Committee for Public Safety attempted to ban the wearing of tweed on college premises, as it was perceived to entrench ideas of elitism, chauvinism, blood-sports, and many other other out-dated and offensive things. Probably racism, too. Fortunately, he says, the proposal was defeated (just) after someone pointed out that tweed effectively hides the stains of beer, mud, and vomit, and as such is the perfect uniform for students the world over.

Still, I'm intrigued by this bush hat thing. Are the hats supposed to represent neo-colonial oppression of native Australians, and as such would go down about as well as a solar topee in Calcutta? Or are they just condsidered a bit naff? Alternatively, has the supply of corks to suspend from the brim run out?

Tempting as it is to believe that this is about corny political correctness, I believe they are under threat because they do not afford the necessary level of head protection to the wearers on horseback!

Desert is no boundary to the nanny state!

... I shall reluctantly have to give up my long-held ambition to go to Sinai and become a hermit. I would be fined because my cave does not conform to planning regulations; fined again over my only friend, my pet lizard Barry, because I do not have an Exotic Animals Owner's License; and fined a third time because my loin-cloth is unacceptable under the new Public Indecency Act (2003).
