] Date Posted: 00:57:50 11/19/04 Fri For those of you who saw the Blair-Chirac summit on BBC news, did anyone notice that the French flag, behind Monsieur Le President, was displayed along with the EU flag, but that the Union Flag, behind Mr Blair, was displayed on its own? Was this, do you think, a deliberate symbol from the French to emphasise how much more engaged they are with Europe as a means to convey British isolation; or was it evidence of the British government's increasing recognition that public opinion would be outraged by besmirching the flag by placing it next to the EU banner? Date Posted: 12:19:37 11/19/04 Fri It is indeed a very conspicuous phenomenon that most, if not all, of the EU member nations apart from us display their national flag alongside the EU banner, in a gesture of demeaning subservience. I would suspect that this is designed to promote the federalist message, whereby their national flag is used to denote a provincial or sub-national status. It is quite a sinister development when EU countries present the EU flag at international events that have nothing to do with the EU. I think the reason we do not is two-fold. 1.It would be politically unacceptable for the Government to do so 2.It would look ridiculous given our foreign policy in certain areas. An example of the second point would be the PM displaying the EU flag at the joint news conference with George Bush. This would be in spite of the central European powers’ objection to our combined foreign policy. Given that the display of the EU flag by the foreign office to represent Britain is neither practical nor politically prudent, there is hope for us yet. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 12:33:17 11/19/04 Fri Go to the Foreign and COmmonwealth Office website (www.fco.gov.uk) and there the British flag is displayed next to the EU one. At least, it used to. Perhaps they've taken it off until they fix the Constitution Referendum. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
