Brad,

Hitting shots out of fine sand is probably the easiest shot in golf but it does take practice.

Go to your course in the evening when few golfers are out and play shot after shot out of the bunkers until it starts to click. You want to play the ball a little forward in your stance with your weight on your left foot (R/H golfer). Open the clubface slightly and pretend that the ball is laying on top of a dollar bill. What you want to envision is slicing the dollar bill out of the sand (forget about the ball). This means that you are starting the slice about two inches behind the ball and continuing this slice two inches beyond the ball. Two very important points: 1) accelerate through impact (do not hit the sand and quit, but rather, power the club through the sand); and 2) finish your swing high.

Once you get the hang of it you will actually look forward to sand shots.

David Lake
