Subject: Lessons For Single Length Play

Started playing golf at age 45 in July 2014. Played with a conventional set from July 2014 to August 2015. Took a few months of lessons during this timeframe. It certainly helped me improve.

In August 2015, I bought a set of 1Irons (3/5/7W, 5/6/7/8/9/PW). I quickly realized, from reading every word of David Lake's 'tips' and 'book', that what my instructor taught me during my lessons didn't apply to single length clubs/play.

I LOVE my 1Irons and they have definitely helped me improve my game over the past 18 months. I hit some beautiful wood shots, and the occasional pretty iron shot. Basically stuck in the high 90's.

My question is what can I do for lessons? Can a typical instructor teach proper technique for single swing plane single length play?

Brent,

There is no "special" way to play single-length golf clubs. Any golf instruction or swing method may be employed. The only caveat being that the same center-of-stance ball position be used and the exact same swing used for every iron within the set.

Brent: I've taught several students that play 1-Irons and I play them myself. As Mr. Lake indicated, the real key to success is using a "center-of-stance" ball position. Other than that, I've found that the basic golf fundamentals apply to whatever club you're using. I teach my students to focus on these basics, which I call GBSAPS, or GRIP, BALL POSITION, STANCE, ALIGNMENT and SWING. Once you learn these basics and gain an understanding of your personal golf swing, you will be able to improve your game. We all have different swings, and I teach each of my students to play using the parameters of their individual swing. This great game of Golf is interesting, always challenging, and it takes a LOT of practice to get these "basics" locked into our brains so we can use them to help us learn and improve! Mr Lake & Mr Reed .... thanks for the replies. I may have downplayed my game a bit; I'll get some pars, maybe one birdie, lots of bogeys, and some doubles. I just haven't been able to eliminate miss-hit iron shots (usually fat or toed off) from my game yet. In general, I still have a 'right problem'. My friends have been playing golf since they were teens .... I STARTED at age 45 .... and I can keep up, and win a hole now & then. So, I'm not suffering too badly ;). Anyway, thanks for the input. Any tips on how to correct the problems I mentioned would be welcomed.

hi brent, download david lake's book on the golf swing. its the best instuction you will ever get. best clubs too

I learned by watching the original Natural Golf videos.
The Graves brothers teach the Moe Norman single axis golf swing. They have instructional videos also.
I switched to the single axis swing a long time ago. I can play with no back pain. My distances with each club are about the same as with the conventional swing.
I shoot in the low 80s regularly. It all depends on my chipping and putting.

Hi

I have recently read Ben Hogans five lessons book. It explains the basics of the golf swing in a simple and easy to understand manner. I think it is a wonderful book and I have derived more benefit from the book that all the golf lessons I have had over the years. I have a much more consistent game than ever after employing the lessons learned in this book.
