There are two major golf club design elements that determine the trajectory of an iron:
1) Loft angle
2) Shafting

As you mention, our #3 iron has a loft angle of only 19º which, using standard shafting methods (based soley upon flex ratings), would produce an unplayable golf club. However, the design specifications of our shafts exactly match the design specifications of our clubheads which produces a precise balance between clubhead and shaft. This produces a golf club whose dynamic properties far exceed those of standard golf clubs on the market (no other golf club manufacturer matches the design elements of shaft and clubhead). Consequently our #3 iron produces a trajectory that you would normally associate with a standard #5 iron. Not only does our shafting method produce a higher than standard trajectory with all of the irons, it also produces the maximum distance attainable per loft angle.

As an example, if I hit a standard #2 or #3 iron with a 19º loft angle I will produce a low trajectory shot that carries about 190 yards. When I hit our #3 iron I produce a high trajectory shot that carries 200 yards. The difference is strictly due to our shafting method versus the standard golf industry shafting method.

Thanks for the quick response. I've read that if you can't hit your driver 260 yards, you shouldn't even have a 3 or 4 iron in your bag. What do you think?

While this may be true for standard length irons it is certainly not true for our 1 Irons. We have numerous customers in their 70's and 80's as well as many women golfers who hit their drives 210 to 220 yards and have great success with our #3 and #4 irons. They do not hit their irons as far as a strong 20 or 30 year-old man, but they still experience a constant yardage gap between their irons from their wedges up through their #3 iron.

That being said, there is a point where a golfer enjoys a greater benefit by replacing low lofted irons with fairway woods. Typically this point is at a 75mph swing speed and below. What distance this equates to with a driver is impossible to say as loft angle, club design, solid ball contact, etc. all influence the distance a golfer achieves with a driver. My gut feeling would be that if a golfer requires a 27º loft angle iron (#5 iron) for a 150 yard shot then he is definitely a candidate for replacing his low lofted irons with fairway woods.

I think I hit my Callaway Hawkeye graphite shaft 5 iron between 165 and 170. So do you think I would benefit from the 3 iron 1Iron, or would I be better off with fairway woods instead?

Based upon your yardage with the Callaway #5 iron I would definitely go with the 1 Iron #3 and #4 irons.
