Subject: Rare Bullets of the Western Campaign

The Western Campaign (engagements west of the Mississippi) during the civil war seems to have left its share of scarce, rare, and unusual bullets. Several examples have been found in the Prairie Grove area, as well as other parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, and other states.

One such bullet is the one in the photo in the logo image at the top of this forum. That particular bullet is known as the "Cosmopolitan Type-II", and the one in the photo was found within just a few feet of where the picture of Bill (to its left) was taken also. I'm aware of two different examples of this bullet sold on eBay, one for several hundred dollars, and the one in the photo for $500, so they are anything but common. The other one on eBay was reportedly found in the Fort Smith, Arkansas area.

A couple of other bullets that Bill is trying to research at this time are what appear to be prussian types, except rather than a conical base cavity, they have a flat and round bottom to the cavity...... very different than the normal prussians seen.

Anyone with unusual bullets found in Arkansas, please send images either by eMail or here on the forum as we are putting together material for an article on unusual pieces for later publication.

Ralph
