Subject: To all Marat fans: Don't Despair!

Hi, just came back from my asian tennis tour when i heard the news. Managed to catch the last fourth set tie-break though. I have also been keeping myself updated of the matches that Marat has had during his time at the Australian Open and just let me say something that perhaps others might have said before me: I'M IMPRESSSED WITH MARAT'S PERFORMANCE. I don't care whether he won today or not.

The fact that he went on the way to the final, beating Sampras and Haas along the way, was quite impressive to me already. To me, Marat's loss today might even turn out in a good way: like all true tennis champions of our time (the Agassi's and the Sampras'), they have all experienced being a finalist of at least one grand slam event. To make it to a GRAND SLAM FINAL is not an easy thing to do; to be frank, i thot that after a "injury" year of 2001, his performance in the first grand slam of the year would not be so great that he could actually make it to the finals! I thot that he would have lost to Sampras in the fourth round! Marat's loss today could serve as an important motivating factor for him to make him believe that he is capable of competing with the top names in tennis, provided that his mind, body and game are one. I'm sure that with Marat's talent, THIS WILL SURELY NOT BE THE LAST GRAND SLAM FINAL THAT HE WILL BE IN.

In one interview conducted during these past 2 weeks, I remembered Marat saying that he would be a dangerous player in 2002. After seeing his spectacular performance at the grand slam of the year, i believe that wholeheartedly.

My two cents' whole of advice, and PLEASE do not send me any rude (or crude) replies saying that i do not deserve to give Marat advice or anything such as that. I have already stated clearly ( in case you are blind) that this advice is my personal opinion. Everyone's entitled to opinions. Its a FREE COUNTRY! Oh, anyway here's my advice: Keep yourself healthy and injury-free, Marat. In this tournament, you have really improved in your physical and (more importantly) your mental performance. Maintenance of such performance is your key to success now.

I believe that being the finalist of the australia open, you will officially be the 2nd ranked player in the world tomorrow on Monday once the ATP rankings are out. Congrats, Marat! I truly enjoyed your performance against Sampras in the fourth round; it reminded me of your brillance of the late 2000. Thank you, Marat. Its been a pleasure watching you.

From a avid tennis fan,
Ian
