It allows you to practice in front of the PTO in patent matters. Further, it also would put your resume in front of many others who have not taken the exam yet.

Depends on your committment or desire in getting into Intellectual Property. You can not call yourself a patent attorney until passing both exams.

I know some attys. doing well in patent infringement who have not taken the exam, they have others in their firms handle PTO matters - but they still are not patent attorneys.

A federal requirement established some time ago to promote that patent practioners would have a better understanding of the tecnologies going into inventions.
