NB: (5) also issued as a one-sided promo of I Got To Have You. (6) both tracks are from the LP.

The Trolls inhabited Chicago, Illinois and issued several noteworthy 45s. They kicked off with
Ever Day And Every Night, forceful beat modelled loosely on Gloria, backed by a Beatlesque
ballad. The follow-up was more overtly Invasion pop, with two upbeat ditties a lá Herman's
Hermits. They Don't Know continued in the same vein and added a slightly fuzzy guitar. There
Was A Time is a frantic fuzzy popper with harmonica, Cryan' Shames harmonies and a rousing
ending. Until that point all had been written or co-written by Richard Clark. Then Richard Gallagher
came up with Baby, What You Ain't Got... and they let RIP with a stormin' fuzz-fest of heavy pop
- awesome! The flip is harmony-pop and sounds exactly like The Critters.

They may have been having an identity crisis around late 1967 because a 45 appeared by The
Carnival Of Sound - Don't Come Around / I Can't Remember (USA 892) - shortly before their
early 1968 release of the identical track (according to the Mindrocker, Vol. 2 notes). In any event
the Trolls' USA 45 is decent pop with Don't Come Around being the stronger cut by far, a real
catchy popper with pumping Diddleyesque riff. After that they retreated to their underground lair...

They re-emerged towards the end of the year as psychedelic-pop-rockers Troll, with a very
interesting album. This included the powerful Werewolf and Witchbreath and a number of other
psychedelic numbers such as Satin City News and Everybody's Child, alongside the lighthearted
Professor Potts Pornographic Projector and Have You Seen The Queen?. The album had a
smattering of slower numbers, too, notably A Winter's Song and I've Only Myself To Blame. The
album is recommended but originals are not easily obtained, as it's now a mini-collectors' item.

Compilation appearances include: Don't Come Around on Mindrocker, Vol. 2 (LP); Everyday
And Every Night on Psychedelic Unknowns, Vol. 3 (LP & CD), The Essential Pebbles
Collection Vol. 1 (Dble CD) and Pebbles Vol. 7 (CD); A recording of I Got To Have You from
February 1968 has also been included on the Early Chicago compilation.

(Vernon Joynson / Max Waller)
