In yesterday's Baton Rouge Advocate (and throughout media outlets, yesterday), details about Homeland Security director Michael Chertoff's testimony before a congressional panel might've slipped past the Neo-Con Kool-Aid drinkers. He was asked why he was at home doing other things and not dealing w/pre and post-Katrina efforts.
He said "my judgement was that we had a battlefield commander. To go down there, I would have been doing Mike Brown's job." OK, that's valid. Read on.
Chertoff eventually had to fire Mike Brown. But what NEEDS to be brought to light is how Chertoff's testimony COMPLETELY contradicts "Brownie's" testimony last month. Brown blamed so much of what went wrong on alleged squabbling between N.O.Mayor Ray Nagin and Governor Kathleen Blanco.
Yesterday, Chertoff said he CALLED BROWN the day before the hurricane to make sure everyone was prepared. What did "Brownie" tell him, THE DAY BEFORE the storm hit?
"He said, 'Everybody's been great, they're cooperating,' " according to Chertoff, yesterday before the congressional panel. He went on to say he received similar assessments from Blanco and the governors of Mississippi and Alabama, and that he didn't endorse Brown's view of Blanco.
Read it again, folks. Homeland Security Director Chertoff ("Brownie's boss") said himself, that DESPITE what Brown said in testimony last month, there were no signs of "dysfunction" at the local & state level before the storm struck. If New Orleans and/or Louisiana were NOT ready for the storm, in FEMA's eyes, apparently even FEMA didn't know it. Ahem. Continue on w/your silly "recall" efforts, kids. It's baseless.
