Subject: My Friend Phil

There are those people
Who naturally become friends
It is like fate or some dynamic
that destiny commends

Phil , he was my friend
With a stature bigger than mine
And a fat IQ
That would make a genius whine

Though Phil would never succeed
At anything of mention
It was clear that his abilities
Were far above convention

Phil liked to get drunk and to get high
All the time
It seemed he conspired to do no other thing
Than blow his mind

He had a passion for altered states
Regardless of consequence
Yet, in my finite ability to comprehend
It still made no sense

Phil was a representation of us all
For I had many friends
And we partied from place to place
Driving to meaningless ends

I gathered myself and left that behind
I moved to another town
I could see a path that he could not
He certainly was hell bound

It has been a number of years since
I had almost forgotten
Until I ran into him the other day
All his teeth were rotten

And he’s living under a bridge somewhere
Where dirt and concrete fold
Couldn’t find housing, job or respect
So I was told
I knew these things about my friend
I tried to tell him before
But, deaf ears are better than a deaf spirit
And he was all the more

I feel badly for the friend I left behind
And his potential
But, the drugs have already killed this man
Why make it exponential

So I said hello and eventually goodbye
With nothing left to say
Feeling that when things get that bad
It is better to walk away
