We own a 95 LX that was my old company car. We bought it with 85000 miles in 1998. We have replaced the a/c, three power window motors, four belts, one water pump, the power steering pump, the gas tank, (under a recall), the radio now looses the stations, the tranny has been rebuilt once and was never right, (the poor guys at Tranny Tech replaced the tranny with another rebuilt and we think it was solved), the day we finally drove it home the engine blew a head gasket. I am now in process of a complete head job on the engine. Ford has a recall on the head gasket, but it is only up to 100,000 miles, ours is at 127,000.
AS far as your interior light problem, try checking the GEM (general electronic module). It is located under the radio behind the storage compartment, just behind the portion of the dash that reaches the floor of the vehicle. I had this go out once and I found that the interior lights, the dash lights, the power locks and windows, the key less entry and some other accessories are controlled by or go through this module. Junk yards don't even know it exists. I purchased a used one for $40 and everything is working fine except for the keyless entry. There is a separarte electronic board for the keyless remote signal that must be bad. Also check all of the connections to the electronics and modules, because they are very inferior and could be corroded.
PS be carefull replacing water pumps. The bypass tube on top and the bottom hose tube extender tend to break when removing. They are about $90 for both, and only Ford has them. A real rip off!!!!
This is the only year that this particular 3.8 engine set up was used on the windstar. Ford was in too much of a hurry to get the Windstar out so they used the set up they had from other vehicles.
